Q. What's the difference between ThyroSynergy® and ThyroSynergy® Advanced?
In November 2016 two changes were made to the ThyroSynergy® formula. The advanced formula supplies L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) and methyl B12 to support healthy gene expression. This is good news if you have been diagnosed with the MTHFR gene variant.
The changes in more detail:
+ folinic acid replaced by 5-MTHF, the biologically active form of folate. 5-MTHF is an alternative supplemental form of folic acid that does not require conversion before it can be utilised by the body.
+ cyanocobalamin (B12) replaced by methylcobalamin, the biologically active form of B12.
+ methyl B12, 5-MTHF and pyridoxal 5-phosphate (active B6) support major methylation pathways. Methylation plays a key role in many aspects of your health.

Q. How will ThyroSynergy® Advanced help thyroid health?
ThyroSynergy® Advanced has been specially formulated to aid thyroid health.
The key ingredient in ThyroSynergy® Advanced is Bladderwrack. This herb is traditionally used to maintain healthy thyroid function. In addition, Bladderwrack is a source of iodine which is an essential nutrient required for proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Iodine is essential for production of the thyroid hormones which regulate many of the body’s metabolic processes.
ThyroSynergy® Advanced also supplies zinc and selenium to assist healthy thyroid activity. These minerals provide nutritional support to aid conversion of thyroxine (T4) to its more active form triiodothyronine (T3).
ThyroSynergy® Advanced also supplies B complex vitamins to help relieve nervous tension, stress and mild anxiety. This includes thiamine hydrochloride (B1), riboflavin (B2), nicotinamide (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxal 5-phosphate (B6), methylcobalamin (B12) and 5-MTHF (active folate).
Q. How much iodine do I really need?
Iodine is generally considered safe when taken as recommended. In Australia the amount of iodine contained in nutritional supplements is closely regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
The TGA guidelines state the recommended daily intake from an iodine supplement must not exceed 300 micrograms per day.
You can feel confident that ThyroSynergy® Advanced supplies a recommended amount of iodine. When taken as recommended ThyroSynergy® Advanced supplies 260 micrograms of iodine per day.
If you are researching products available on US websites it is important to know that these products are not regulated by the TGA and can contain iodine well above what is recommended here in Australia.

If you have any questions about the suitability of ThyroSynergy® Advanced you should consult with your healthcare practitioner. They are best suited to make recommendations based on your personal health circumstances.
Q. Since starting ThyroSynergy® Advanced my urine has gone yellow. Is this normal?
ThyroSynergy® Advanced contains riboflavin, or vitamin B2. This B vitamin contains water soluble yellow pigments. In fact, the name riboflavin is derived from flavin, the Latin word for yellow. As your body uses vitamin B2 small amounts of yellow coloured compounds are released into your urine for excretion. This turns your urine yellow. It’s perfectly normal, and does not indicate you are taking excess amounts of vitamin B2.
Q. Does ThyroSynergy® Advanced contain the active form of vitamin B12?
ThyroSynergy® Advanced supplies methylcobalamin, an active form of vitamin B12 which may assist in the management of a dietary vitamin B12 deficiency.

Your medical practitioner is best suited to assess suitability as they can take into account your medical history, and your current thyroid blood test results.

Q. What is the recommended upper level of intake for iodine?
In Australia the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHRMC) use current scientific evidence to provide guidelines on the recommended intake of nutrients. They also provide information on the maximum safe upper level of intake for nutrients.
The NHRMC have set the upper level of intake for iodine at 1,100 micrograms per day for adults. This recommendation is based on currently available scientific knowledge.
Iodine supplements are generally considered safe when taken as recommended. Iodine is a mineral that is often only required in trace, or microgram amounts to support thyroid hormone activity.

Q. What is the recommended intake of iodine during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Here in Australia nutrient intake is governed by the National Health + Medical Research Council.
The NHMRC have set the recommended intake of iodine at 220 micrograms per day during pregnancy. For breastfeeding women it’s set at 270 micrograms per day.
The NHRMC also sets the upper level of intake for nutrients. In pregnancy it’s recommended that you don’t take more than 1,100 micrograms/day.
For women who are breastfeeding it’s recommended they do not take more than 1,100 micrograms/day. This refers to iodine from all sources, both supplemental and food sources.
There is an increased need for iodine during pregnancy and breastfeeding and women should therefore ensure their daily iodine intake is adequate.
A supplement is recommended as it is unlikely women will get enough iodine in their diet. An iodine supplement, or a multi-nutrient formula is a convenient way to take iodine.
Q. Can ThyroSynergy® Advanced be used for hypothyroidism?
If you have a diagnosed thyroid disorder please consult your healthcare practitioner. Your healthcare practitioner is best suited to assess the suitability of ThyroSynergy® Advanced for you. For professional reasons I am not able to provide specific health advice.
Q. Is ThyroSynergy® Advanced suitable for those with a diagnosed hyperthyroid disorder?
ThyroSynergy® Advanced is not usually recommended when you have an over active thyroid as it contains iodine.
If you have been diagnosed with an hyperthyroid disorder it’s likely you have already been advised NOT to take any type of iodine supplement, or consume foods high in iodine.
For specific advice please consult your medical practitioner. They are best suited to make a recommendation based on your personal health circumstances.
Q. Can men take ThyroSynergy® Advanced?
Yes, ThyroSynergy® Advanced contains a carefully formulated range of nutrients to aid thyroid health for both men and women.
Q. Can ThyroSynergy® Advanced have possible side effects?
ThyroSynergy® Advanced supplies nutrients that are generally considered safe when taken as recommended. Please consult your healthcare practitioner if you have specific questions about the suitability of ThyroSynergy® Advanced. Your healthcare practitioner can provide advice based on your personal health circumstances. Your healthcare practitioner should also be consulted before taking a new nutritional supplement when you are taking a prescribed thyroid medication.

Q. Can L-5- Methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) have side effects?
L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), the active form of folate, is generally recognised as safe when taken as recommended. However, taking a high amount may cause side effects in some individuals. For example; you may see supplements advertised on US websites that supply up to 5mg of 5-MTHF. 5mg is the equivalent of 5,000µg which is considered a high dose. In Australia, nutritional supplements are not permitted to recommend more than 500µg of 5-MTHF per daily dose. You will see ThyroSynergy® Advanced supplies 400µg of 5-MTHF when taken as recommended.
Q. How is ThyroSynergy® Advanced different to thyroid health supplements advertised on US websites?
One of the biggest differences between ThyroSynergy® Advanced and thyroid health supplements available on US websites is the amount of iodine it contains.
In Australia the amount of iodine contained in supplements is closely regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The TGA guidelines state the recommended daily amount of iodine must not exceed 300 micrograms per day. Taking high amounts of iodine well above the upper tolerable limit is not wise unless you are doing it under close supervision with your healthcare practitioner.
ThyroSynergy® Advanced contains 130 micrograms of iodine per capsule. When taken as directed ThyroSynergy® Advanced supplies 260 micrograms of iodine daily.
Products available on international websites are not regulated by the TGA and can therefore recommend iodine well above what is considered safe here in Australia. The TGA advises Australian consumers to be wary of ordering nutritional products over the internet.
Q. Which country is the Bladderwrack sourced from?
The Bladderwrack featured in ThyroSynergy® Advanced is cultivated from the wild along the shores of southern France. This sustainably sourced Bladderwrack meets strict quality assurance (QA) checks for purity and potency at every step of the manufacturing process.
The QA steps include botanical identity, heavy metals, and microbiology testing. This specialty Bladderwrack ingredient complies with both stringent European Pharmacopoeia, and Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) quality standards.
As part of the quality assurance process the Bladderwrack is standardised to contain a set amount of iodine. This ensures each vegetarian capsule supplies 130 micrograms of iodine as stated on the label.

Q. What are vegetarian capsules?
Vegetarian capsules are made from plant cellulose making them suitable for vegans, vegetarians, or those who choose to avoid consuming animal-derived gelatin capsules.
Q. What is the difference between gelatin and vegetarian capsules?
The biggest difference between gelatin and vegetarian capsules is that vegetarian capsules do not contain any animal derived ingredients.
More and more consumers are seeking clean-label products that don’t use animal derived ingredients. Vegetarian capsules offer an ethical, and healthy alternative to gelatin capsules. Gelatin, a common material used to produce capsules, is sourced from the connective tissue of cows (bovine), or pigs (porcine). Supplement companies often opt to use gelatin capsules as they are cheaper.
Nutritional products made using vegetarian capsules, sometimes referred to as Vcaps®, are made from plant cellulose. This makes these capsules the ideal alternative for vegans, vegetarians, or those who choose to avoid taking gelatin capsules.
ThyroSynergy® Advanced is formulated using Vcap® vegetarian capsules. These capsules are non-GMO Project verified, gluten-free, and preservative-free. The cellulose is derived from the white pine.
Q. Will ThyroSynergy® Advanced assist adrenal health?
ThyroSynergy® Advanced features a comprehensive range of B vitamins which may help relieve nervous tension, stress and mild anxiety. This includes pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) which may assist adrenal function during times of stress. The adrenal glands release stress related hormones in response to mental and emotional tension.
Q. Why is pyridoxal 5-phosphate (P5P) different to standard forms of vitamin B6?
Nutritional supplements may contain the standard form of vitamin B6 known as pyridoxine hydrochloride, or pyridoxal 5-phosphate (P5P). P5P is the metabolically active form of vitamin B6. ThyroSynergy® Advanced supplies 24.5mg of P5P along with other B-group vitamins.
Q. Will ThyroSynergy® Advanced assist healthy mood?
During periods of stress there can be an increased demand for a range of nutrients, particularly B-group vitamins. These vitamins help relieve nervous tension, stress and mild anxiety. Furthermore, B vitamins help support cognitive health, and mental performance.

This includes; thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), nicotinamide (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxal 5-phosphate (vitamin B6), L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), and methylcobalamin (Vitamin B12).

The thyroid hormones regulate many of the body’s metabolic processes, including regulating the natural growth and shedding cycles of hair. Therefore, a decline in thyroid hormone activity can trigger hair loss from all over the scalp.
ThyroSynergy® Advanced is specially formulated to aid thyroid health. This may indirectly assist hair health.
For specific advice regarding thyroid hair loss please consult your healthcare practitioner.
Q. Why doesn’t ThyroSynergy® Advanced contain tyrosine?
There are two reason why tyrosine is not included in the ThyroSynergy® Advanced formula.
Firstly, tyrosine supplements are best taken away from meals as tyrosine is best absorped when taken on an empty stomach. In fact, this amino acid is very poorly absorbed when taken with food.
As ThyroSynergy® Advanced is recommended with meals there would have been limited benefits from having tyrosine in the formula.
Secondly, tyrosine has the potential to interact with a variety of prescribed medications. This nutrient was not added to the formula to avoid issues with potential contraindications with commonly prescribed medications.
Q. Is ThyroSynergy® Advanced a copper-free formulation?
ThyroSynergy® Advanced does not contain copper as it’s rare to be truly deficient in copper. Furthermore, copper blocks zinc, a key nutrient to support thyroid health.
